           Buttothegenerals,especiallytheforeignonesintheRussianarmy,whowishedtodistinguishthemselves,toastonishsomebody,andforsomereasontocaptureakingoraduke—itseemedthatnow—whenanybattlemustbehorribleandsenseless—wastheverytimetofightandconquersomebody.Kutúzovmerelyshruggedhisshoulderswhenoneafteranothertheypresentedprojectsofmaneuverstobemadewiththosesoldiers—ill-shod,insufficientlyclad,andhalfstarved—whowithinamonthandwithoutfightingabattlehaddwindledtohalftheirnumber,andwhoatthebestiftheflightcontinuedwouldhavetogoagreaterdistancethantheyhadalreadytraversed,beforetheyreachedthefrontier.

           Thislongingtodistinguishthemselves,tomaneuver,tooverthrow,andtocutoffshoweditselfparticularlywhenevertheRussiansstumbledontheFrencharmy.

           SoitwasatKrásnoe,wheretheyexpectedtofindoneofthethreeFrenchcolumnsandstumbledinsteadonNapoleonhimselfwithsixteenthousandmen.DespiteallKutúzov’seffortstoavoidthatruinousencounterandtopreservehistroops,themassacreofthebrokenmobofFrenchsoldiersbyworn-outRussianscontinuedatKrásnoeforthreedays.

           Tollwroteadisposition:“Thefirstcolumnwillmarchtosoandso,”etc.Andasusualnothinghappenedinaccordwiththedisposition.PrinceEugèneofWürttembergfiredfromahillovertheFrenchcrowdsthatwererunningpast,anddemandedreinforcementswhichdidnotarrive.
