           TwomonthspreviouslywhenPierrewasalreadystayingwiththeRostóvshehadreceivedaletterfromPrinceTheodore,askinghimtocometoPetersburgtoconferonsomeimportantquestionsthatwerebeingdiscussedtherebyasocietyofwhichPierrewasoneoftheprincipalfounders.
