Chapter 30

           

           TheglowofthefirstfirethatbeganonthesecondofSeptemberwaswatchedfromthevariousroadsbythefugitiveMuscovitesandbytheretreatingtroops,withmanydifferentfeelings.

           TheRostóvpartyspentthenightatMytíshchi,fourteenmilesfromMoscow.TheyhadstartedsolateonthefirstofSeptember,theroadhadbeensoblockedbyvehiclesandtroops,somanythingshadbeenforgottenforwhichservantsweresentback,thattheyhaddecidedtospendthatnightataplacethreemilesoutofMoscow.ThenextmorningtheywokelateandwereagaindelayedsooftenthattheyonlygotasfarasGreatMytíshchi.Atteno’clockthateveningtheRostóvfamilyandthewoundedtravelingwiththemwerealldistributedintheyardsandhutsofthatlargevillage.TheRostóvs’servantsandcoachmenandtheorderliesofthewoundedofficers,afterattendingtotheirmasters,hadsupper,fedthehorses,andcameoutintotheporches.

           InaneighboringhutlayRaévski’sadjutantwithafracturedwrist.Theawfulpainhesufferedmadehimmoanincessantlyandpiteously,andhismoaningsoundedterribleinthedarknessoftheautumnnight.HehadspentthefirstnightinthesameyardastheRostóvs.Thecountesssaidshehadbeenunabletoclosehereyesonaccountofhismoaning,andatMytíshchishemovedintoaworsehutsimplytobefartherawayfromthewoundedman.

           Inthedarknessofthenightoneoftheservantsnoticed,abovethehighbodyofacoachstandingbeforetheporch,thesmallglowofanotherfire.
