           Sónya’sletterwrittenfromTróitsa,whichhadcomeasananswertoNicholas’prayer,waspromptedbythis:thethoughtofgettingNicholasmarriedtoanheiressoccupiedtheoldcountess’mindmoreandmore.SheknewthatSónyawasthechiefobstacletothishappening,andSónya’slifeinthecountess’househadgrownharderandharder,especiallyaftertheyhadreceivedaletterfromNicholastellingofhismeetingwithPrincessMaryinBoguchárovo.ThecountessletnooccasionslipofmakinghumiliatingorcruelallusionstoSónya.

           ButafewdaysbeforetheyleftMoscow,movedandexcitedbyallthatwasgoingon,shecalledSónyatoherand,insteadofreproachingandmakingdemandsonher,tearfullyimploredhertosacrificeherselfandrepayallthatthefamilyhaddoneforherbybreakingoffherengagementwithNicholas.

           “Ishallnotbeatpeacetillyoupromisemethis.”

           Sónyaburstintohystericaltearsandrepliedthroughhersobsthatshewoulddoanythingandwaspreparedforanything,butgavenoactualpromiseandcouldnotbringherselftodecidetodowhatwasdemandedofher.Shemustsacrificeherselfforthefamilythathadrearedandbroughtherup.TosacrificeherselfforotherswasSónya’shabit.Herpositioninthehousewassuchthatonlybysacrificecouldsheshowherworth,andshewasaccustomedtothisandloveddoingit.Butinallherformeractsofself-sacrificeshehadbeenhappilyconsciousthattheyraisedherinherownesteemandinthatofothers,andsomadehermoreworthyofNicholaswhomshelovedmorethananythingintheworld.
