           ThedayafterhehadbeenreceivedintotheLodge,PierrewassittingathomereadingabookandtryingtofathomthesignificanceoftheSquare,onesideofwhichsymbolizedGod,anothermoralthings,athirdphysicalthings,andthefourthacombinationofthese.NowandthenhisattentionwanderedfromthebookandtheSquareandheformedinimaginationanewplanoflife.OnthepreviouseveningattheLodge,hehadheardthatarumorofhisduelhadreachedtheEmperorandthatitwouldbewiserforhimtoleavePetersburg.Pierreproposedgoingtohisestatesinthesouthandthereattendingtothewelfareofhisserfs.Hewasjoyfullyplanningthisnewlife,whenPrinceVasílisuddenlyenteredtheroom.
