           ThroughthecrossstreetsoftheKhamóvnikiquartertheprisonersmarched,followedonlybytheirescortandthevehiclesandwagonsbelongingtothatescort,butwhentheyreachedthesupplystorestheycameamongahugeandcloselypackedtrainofartillerymingledwithprivatevehicles.

           Atthebridgetheyallhalted,waitingforthoseinfronttogetacross.Fromthebridgetheyhadaviewofendlesslinesofmovingbaggagetrainsbeforeandbehindthem.Totheright,wheretheKalúgaroadturnsnearNeskúchny,endlessrowsoftroopsandcartsstretchedawayintothedistance.TheseweretroopsofBeauharnais’corpswhichhadstartedbeforeanyoftheothers.Behind,alongtheriversideandacrosstheStoneBridge,wereNey’stroopsandtransport.

           Davout’stroops,inwhosechargeweretheprisoners,werecrossingtheCrimeanbridgeandsomewerealreadydebouchingintotheKalúgaroad.ButthebaggagetrainsstretchedoutsothatthelastofBeauharnais’trainhadnotyetgotoutofMoscowandreachedtheKalúgaroadwhenthevanguardofNey’sarmywasalreadyemergingfromtheGreatOrdýnkaStreet.

           WhentheyhadcrossedtheCrimeanbridgetheprisonersmovedafewstepsforward,halted,andagainmovedon,andfromallsidesvehiclesandmencrowdedcloserandclosertogether.TheyadvancedthefewhundredpacesthatseparatedthebridgefromtheKalúgaroad,takingmorethananhourtodoso,andcameoutuponthesquarewherethestreetsoftheTransmoskváwardandtheKalúgaroadconverge,andtheprisonersjammedclosetogetherhadtostandforsomehoursatthatcrossway.
