           PrinceAndrewhadspenttwoyearscontinuouslyinthecountry.

           AlltheplansPierrehadattemptedonhisestates—andconstantlychangingfromonethingtoanotherhadneveraccomplished—werecarriedoutbyPrinceAndrewwithoutdisplayandwithoutperceptibledifficulty.

           HehadinthehighestdegreeapracticaltenacitywhichPierrelacked,andwithoutfussorstrainonhispartthissetthingsgoing.

           Ononeofhisestatesthethreehundredserfswereliberatedandbecamefreeagriculturallaborers—thisbeingoneofthefirstexamplesofthekindinRussia.Onotherestatestheserfs’compulsorylaborwascommutedforaquitrent.AtrainedmidwifewasengagedforBoguchárovoathisexpense,andapriestwaspaidtoteachreadingandwritingtothechildrenofthepeasantsandhouseholdserfs.

           PrinceAndrewspenthalfhistimeatBaldHillswithhisfatherandhisson,whowasstillinthecareofnurses.Theotherhalfhespentin“BoguchárovoCloister,”ashisfathercalledPrinceAndrew’sestate.DespitetheindifferencetotheaffairsoftheworldhehadexpressedtoPierre,hediligentlyfollowedallthatwenton,receivedmanybooks,andtohissurprisenoticedthatwhenheorhisfatherhadvisitorsfromPetersburg,theveryvortexoflife,thesepeoplelaggedbehindhimself—whoneverleftthecountry—inknowledgeofwhatwashappeninginhomeandforeignaffairs.
