           HavingdescendedthehillthegeneralafterwhomPierrewasgallopingturnedsharplytotheleft,andPierre,losingsightofhim,gallopedinamongsomeranksofinfantrymarchingaheadofhim.Hetriedtopasseitherinfrontofthemortotherightorleft,butthereweresoldierseverywhere,allwiththesamepreoccupiedexpressionandbusywithsomeunseenbutevidentlyimportanttask.Theyallgazedwiththesamedissatisfiedandinquiringexpressionatthisstoutmaninawhitehat,whoforsomeunknownreasonthreatenedtotramplethemunderhishorse’shoofs.
