           Inthewinterof1813NicholasmarriedPrincessMaryandmovedtoBaldHillswithhiswife,hismother,andSónya.

           Withinfouryearshehadpaidoffallhisremainingdebtswithoutsellinganyofhiswife’sproperty,andhavingreceivedasmallinheritanceonthedeathofacousinhepaidhisdebttoPierreaswell.

           Inanotherthreeyears,by1820,hehadsomanagedhisaffairsthathewasabletobuyasmallestateadjoiningBaldHillsandwasnegotiatingtobuybackOtrádnoe—thatbeinghispetdream.

           Havingstartedfarmingfromnecessity,hesoongrewsodevotedtoitthatitbecamehisfavoriteandalmosthissoleoccupation.Nicholaswasaplainfarmer:hedidnotlikeinnovations,especiallytheEnglishonesthencomingintovogue.Helaughedattheoreticaltreatisesonestatemanagement,dislikedfactories,theraisingofexpensiveproducts,andthebuyingofexpensiveseedcorn,anddidnotmakeahobbyofanyparticularpartoftheworkonhisestate.Healwayshadbeforehismind’seyetheestateasawholeandnotanyparticularpartofit.Thechiefthinginhiseyeswasnotthenitrogeninthesoil,northeoxygenintheair,normanures,norspecialplows,butthatmostimportantagentbywhichnitrogen,oxygen,manure,andplowweremadeeffective—thepeasantlaborer.WhenNicholasfirstbeganfarmingandbegantounderstanditsdifferentbranches,itwastheserfwhoespeciallyattractedhisattention.Thepeasantseemedtohimnotmerelyatool,butalsoajudgeoffarmingandanendinhimself.
