           Earlyintheyear1806NicholasRostóvreturnedhomeonleave.DenísovwasgoinghometoVorónezhandRostóvpersuadedhimtotravelwithhimasfarasMoscowandtostaywithhimthere.MeetingacomradeatthelastpoststationbutonebeforeMoscow,Denísovhaddrunkthreebottlesofwinewithhimand,despitethejoltingrutsacrossthesnow-coveredroad,didnotoncewakeuponthewaytoMoscow,butlayatthebottomofthesleighbesideRostóv,whogrewmoreandmoreimpatientthenearertheygottoMoscow.

           “Howmuchlonger?Howmuchlonger?Oh,theseinsufferablestreets,shops,bakers’signboards,streetlamps,andsleighs!”thoughtRostóv,whentheirleavepermitshadbeenpassedatthetowngateandtheyhadenteredMoscow.

           “Denísov!We’rehere!He’sasleep,”headded,leaningforwardwithhiswholebodyasifinthatpositionhehopedtohastenthespeedofthesleigh.

           Denísovgavenoanswer.

           Denísovraisedhishead,coughed,andmadenoanswer.

           “Dmítri,”saidRostóvtohisvaletonthebox,“thoselightsareinourhouse,aren’tthey?”

           “Yes,sir,andthere’salightinyourfather’sstudy.
