           TwomonthshadelapsedsincethenewsofthebattleofAusterlitzandthelossofPrinceAndrewhadreachedBaldHills,andinspiteoftheletterssentthroughtheembassyandallthesearchesmade,hisbodyhadnotbeenfoundnorwasheonthelistofprisoners.Whatwasworstofallforhisrelationswasthefactthattherewasstillapossibilityofhishavingbeenpickeduponthebattlefieldbythepeopleoftheplaceandthathemightnowbelying,recoveringordying,aloneamongstrangersandunabletosendnewsofhimself.ThegazettesfromwhichtheoldprincefirstheardofthedefeatatAusterlitzstated,asusualverybrieflyandvaguely,thatafterbrilliantengagementstheRussianshadhadtoretreatandhadmadetheirwithdrawalinperfectorder.Theoldprinceunderstoodfromthisofficialreportthatourarmyhadbeendefeated.AweekafterthegazettereportofthebattleofAusterlitzcamealetterfromKutúzovinformingtheprinceofthefatethathadbefallenhisson.

           “Yourson,”wroteKutúzov,“fellbeforemyeyes,astandardinhishandandattheheadofaregiment—hefellasahero,worthyofhisfatherandhisfatherland.Tothegreatregretofmyselfandofthewholearmyitisstilluncertainwhetherheisaliveornot.Icomfortmyselfandyouwiththehopethatyoursonisalive,forotherwisehewouldhavebeenmentionedamongtheofficersfoundonthefieldofbattle,alistofwhomhasbeensentmeunderflagoftruce.
