           PrinceAndrew’seyeswerestillfollowingPfueloutoftheroomwhenCountBennigsenenteredhurriedly,andnoddingtoBolkónski,butnotpausing,wentintothestudy,givinginstructionstohisadjutantashewent.TheEmperorwasfollowinghim,andBennigsenhadhastenedontomakesomepreparationsandtobereadytoreceivethesovereign.ChernýshevandPrinceAndrewwentoutintotheporch,wheretheEmperor,wholookedfatigued,wasdismounting.MarquisPaulucciwastalkingtohimwithparticularwarmthandtheEmperor,withhisheadbenttotheleft,waslisteningwithadissatisfiedair.TheEmperormovedforwardevidentlywishingtoendtheconversation,buttheflushedandexcitedItalian,obliviousofdecorum,followedhimandcontinuedtospeak.

           “Andasforthemanwhoadvisedformingthiscamp—theDrissacamp,”saidPaulucci,astheEmperormountedthestepsandnoticingPrinceAndrewscannedhisunfamiliarface,“astothatperson,sire...”continuedPaulucci,desperately,apparentlyunabletorestrainhimself,“themanwhoadvisedtheDrissacamp—Iseenoalternativebutthelunaticasylumorthegallows!”

           WithoutheedingtheendoftheItalian’sremarks,andasthoughnothearingthem,theEmperor,recognizingBolkónski,addressedhimgraciously.

           TheEmperorwentintothestudy.HewasfollowedbyPrincePeterMikháylovichVolkónskiandBaronStein,andthedoorclosedbehindthem.
