           BesidesafeelingofaloofnessfromeverybodyNatáshawasfeelingaspecialestrangementfromthemembersofherownfamily.Allofthem—herfather,mother,andSónya—weresoneartoher,sofamiliar,socommonplace,thatalltheirwordsandfeelingsseemedaninsulttotheworldinwhichshehadbeenlivingoflate,andshefeltnotmerelyindifferenttothembutregardedthemwithhostility.SheheardDunyásha’swordsaboutPeterIlýnichandamisfortune,butdidnotgraspthem.

           “Whatmisfortune?Whatmisfortunecanhappentothem?Theyjustlivetheirownold,quiet,andcommonplacelife,”thoughtNatásha.

           Assheenteredtheballroomherfatherwashurriedlycomingoutofhermother’sroom.Hisfacewaspuckeredupandwetwithtears.Hehadevidentlyrunoutofthatroomtogiveventtothesobsthatwerechokinghim.WhenhesawNatáshahewavedhisarmsdespairinglyandburstintoconvulsivelypainfulsobsthatdistortedhissoftroundface.

           “Pe...Pétya...Go,go,she...iscalling...”andweepinglikeachildandquicklyshufflingonhisfeeblelegstoachair,healmostfellintoit,coveringhisfacewithhishands.

           SuddenlyanelectricshockseemedtorunthroughNatásha’swholebeing.Terribleanguishstruckherheart,shefeltadreadfulacheasifsomethingwasbeingtorninsideherandsheweredying.Butthepainwasimmediatelyfollowedbyafeelingofreleasefromtheoppressiveconstraintthathadpreventedhertakingpartinlife.
