           FromthedaywhenPierre,afterleavingtheRostóvs’withNatásha’sgratefullookfreshinhismind,hadgazedatthecometthatseemedtobefixedintheskyandfeltthatsomethingnewwasappearingonhisownhorizon—fromthatdaytheproblemofthevanityanduselessnessofallearthlythings,thathadincessantlytormentedhim,nolongerpresenteditself.Thatterriblequestion“Why?”“Wherefore?”whichhadcometohimamideveryoccupation,wasnowreplaced,notbyanotherquestionorbyareplytotheformerquestion,butbyherimage.Whenhelistenedto,orhimselftookpartin,trivialconversations,whenhereadorheardofhumanbasenessorfolly,hewasnothorrifiedasformerly,anddidnotaskhimselfwhymenstruggledsoaboutthesethingswhenallissotransientandincomprehensible—butherememberedherashehadlastseenher,andallhisdoubtsvanished—notbecauseshehadansweredthequestionsthathadhauntedhim,butbecausehisconceptionofhertransferredhiminstantlytoanother,abrighter,realmofspiritualactivityinwhichnoonecouldbejustifiedorguilty—arealmofbeautyandlovewhichitwasworthlivingfor.Whateverworldlybasenesspresenteditselftohim,hesaidtohimself:

           “Well,supposingN.N.hasswindledthecountryandtheTsar,andthecountryandtheTsarconferhonorsuponhim,whatdoesthatmatter?Shesmiledatmeyesterdayandaskedmetocomeagain,andIloveher,andnoonewilleverknowit.”Andhissoulfeltcalmandpeaceful.
