           “Shehascometostaywithme,”saidPrincessMary.“Thecountandcountesswillbehereinafewdays.Thecountessisinadreadfulstate;butitwasnecessaryforNatáshaherselftoseeadoctor.Theyinsistedonhercomingwithme.”

           “Yes,isthereafamilyfreefromsorrownow?”saidPierre,addressingNatásha.“Youknowithappenedtheverydaywewererescued.Isawhim.Whatadelightfulboyhewas!”

           Natáshalookedathim,andbywayofanswertohiswordshereyeswidenedandlitup.

           “Whatcanonesayorthinkofasaconsolation?”saidPierre.“Nothing!Whyhadsuchasplendidboy,sofulloflife,todie?”

           “Yes,inthesedaysitwouldbehardtolivewithoutfaith...”remarkedPrincessMary.

           “Yes,yes,thatisreallytrue,”Pierrehastilyinterruptedher.

           “Whyisittrue?”Natáshaasked,lookingattentivelyintoPierre’seyes.

           “Howcanyouaskwhy?”saidPrincessMary.“Thethoughtaloneofwhatawaits...”

           NatáshawithoutwaitingforPrincessMarytofinishagainlookedinquiringlyatPierre.

           “Andbecause,”Pierrecontinued,“onlyonewhobelievesthatthereisaGodrulinguscanbearalosssuchashersand...yours.”

           Natáshahadalreadyopenedhermouthtospeakbutsuddenlystopped.PierrehurriedlyturnedawayfromherandagainaddressedPrincessMary,askingabouthisfriend’slastdays.

           Pierre’sconfusionhadnowalmostvanished,butatthesametimehefeltthathisfreedomhadalsocompletelygone.Hefeltthattherewasnowajudgeofhiseverywordandactionwhosejudgmentmatteredmoretohimthanthatofalltherestoftheworld.
