           Inthetavern,beforewhichstoodthedoctor’scoveredcart,therewerealreadysomefiveofficers.MaryHendríkhovna,aplumplittleblondeGerman,inadressingjacketandnightcap,wassittingonabroadbenchinthefrontcorner.Herhusband,thedoctor,layasleepbehindher.RostóvandIlyín,onenteringtheroom,werewelcomedwithmerryshoutsandlaughter.

           “Dearme,howjollyweare!”saidRostóvlaughing.

           “Andwhydoyoustandtheregaping?”

           “Whatswellstheyare!Why,thewaterstreamsfromthem!Don’tmakeourdrawingroomsowet.”

           “Don’tmessMaryHendríkhovna’sdress!”criedothervoices.

           RostóvandIlyínhastenedtofindacornerwheretheycouldchangeintodryclotheswithoutoffendingMaryHendríkhovna’smodesty.Theyweregoingintoatinyrecessbehindapartitiontochange,butfounditcompletelyfilledbythreeofficerswhosatplayingcardsbythelightofasolitarycandleonanemptybox,andtheseofficerswouldonnoaccountyieldtheirposition.MaryHendríkhovnaobligedthemwiththeloanofapetticoattobeusedasacurtain,andbehindthatscreenRostóvandIlyín,helpedbyLavrúshkawhohadbroughttheirkits,changedtheirwetthingsfordryones.
