           TheBiblelegendtellsusthattheabsenceoflabor—idleness—wasaconditionofthefirstman’sblessednessbeforetheFall.Fallenmanhasretainedaloveofidleness,butthecurseweighsontheracenotonlybecausewehavetoseekourbreadinthesweatofourbrows,butbecauseourmoralnatureissuchthatwecannotbebothidleandatease.Aninnervoicetellsusweareinthewrongifweareidle.Ifmancouldfindastateinwhichhefeltthatthoughidlehewasfulfillinghisduty,hewouldhavefoundoneoftheconditionsofman’sprimitiveblessedness.Andsuchastateofobligatoryandirreproachableidlenessisthelotofawholeclass—themilitary.Thechiefattractionofmilitaryservicehasconsistedandwillconsistinthiscompulsoryandirreproachableidleness.

           NicholasRostóvexperiencedthisblissfulconditiontothefullwhen,after1807,hecontinuedtoserveinthePávlogradregiment,inwhichhealreadycommandedthesquadronhehadtakenoverfromDenísov.

           Rostóvhadbecomeabluff,good-naturedfellow,whomhisMoscowacquaintanceswouldhaveconsideredratherbadform,butwhowaslikedandrespectedbyhiscomrades,subordinates,andsuperiors,andwaswellcontentedwithhislife.Oflate,in1809,hefoundinlettersfromhomemorefrequentcomplaintsfromhismotherthattheiraffairswerefallingintogreaterandgreaterdisorder,andthatitwastimeforhimtocomebacktogladdenandcomforthisoldparents.
