           AtthebeginningofJulymoreandmoredisquietingreportsaboutthewarbegantospreadinMoscow;peoplespokeofanappealbytheEmperortothepeople,andofhiscominghimselffromthearmytoMoscow.AndasuptotheeleventhofJulynomanifestoorappealhadbeenreceived,exaggeratedreportsbecamecurrentaboutthemandaboutthepositionofRussia.ItwassaidthattheEmperorwasleavingthearmybecauseitwasindanger,itwassaidthatSmolénskhadsurrendered,thatNapoleonhadanarmyofamillionandonlyamiraclecouldsaveRussia.
