           OnourrightflankcommandedbyBagratión,atnineo’clockthebattlehadnotyetbegun.NotwishingtoagreetoDolgorúkov’sdemandtocommencetheaction,andwishingtoavertresponsibilityfromhimself,PrinceBagratiónproposedtoDolgorúkovtosendtoinquireofthecommanderinchief.Bagratiónknewthatasthedistancebetweenthetwoflankswasmorethansixmiles,evenifthemessengerwerenotkilled(whichheverylikelywouldbe),andfoundthecommanderinchief(whichwouldbeverydifficult),hewouldnotbeabletogetbackbeforeevening.

           Allhiswisheswerebeingfulfilledthatmorning:therewastobeageneralengagementinwhichhewastakingpart,morethanthat,hewasorderlytothebravestgeneral,andstillmore,hewasgoingwithamessagetoKutúzov,perhapseventothesovereignhimself.Themorningwasbright,hehadagoodhorseunderhim,andhisheartwasfullofjoyandhappiness.
