           Pétya,havinglefthispeopleaftertheirdeparturefromMoscow,joinedhisregimentandwassoontakenasorderlybyageneralcommandingalargeguerrilladetachment.Fromthetimehereceivedhiscommission,andespeciallysincehehadjoinedtheactivearmyandtakenpartinthebattleofVyázma,Pétyahadbeeninaconstantstateofblissfulexcitementatbeinggrown-upandinaperpetualecstatichurrynottomissanychancetodosomethingreallyheroic.Hewashighlydelightedwithwhathesawandexperiencedinthearmy,butatthesametimeitalwaysseemedtohimthatthereallyheroicexploitswerebeingperformedjustwherehedidnothappentobe.Andhewasalwaysinahurrytogetwherehewasnot.

           Whenonthetwenty-firstofOctoberhisgeneralexpressedawishtosendsomebodytoDenísov’sdetachment,Pétyabeggedsopiteouslytobesentthatthegeneralcouldnotrefuse.ButwhendispatchinghimherecalledPétya’smadactionatthebattleofVyázma,whereinsteadofridingbytheroadtotheplacetowhichhehadbeensent,hehadgallopedtotheadvancedlineunderthefireoftheFrenchandhadtheretwicefiredhispistol.SonowthegeneralexplicitlyforbadehistakingpartinanyactionwhateverofDenísov’s.ThatwaswhyPétyahadblushedandgrownconfusedwhenDenísovaskedhimwhetherhecouldstay.BeforetheyhadriddentotheoutskirtsoftheforestPétyahadconsideredhemustcarryouthisinstructionsstrictlyandreturnatonce.
