           AgainPierrewasovertakenbythedepressionhesodreaded.Forthreedaysafterthedeliveryofhisspeechatthelodgehelayonasofaathomereceivingnooneandgoingnowhere.

           Itwasjustthenthathereceivedaletterfromhiswife,whoimploredhimtoseeher,tellinghimhowgrievedshewasabouthimandhowshewishedtodevoteherwholelifetohim.

           AttheendofthelettersheinformedhimthatinafewdaysshewouldreturntoPetersburgfromabroad.

           FollowingthisletteroneoftheMasonicBrotherswhomPierrerespectedlessthantheothersforcedhiswayintoseehimand,turningtheconversationuponPierre’smatrimonialaffairs,bywayoffraternaladviceexpressedtheopinionthathisseveritytohiswifewaswrongandthathewasneglectingoneofthefirstrulesofFreemasonrybynotforgivingthepenitent.

           Ifhedidnotatoncegivehisconsenttoareunionwithhiswife,itwasonlybecauseinhisstateofdepressionhedidnotfeelabletotakeanystep.
