           Kutúzovasfaraswasinhispower,insteadoftryingtocheckthemovementoftheFrenchaswasdesiredinPetersburgandbytheRussianarmygenerals,directedhiswholeactivityhere,ashehaddoneatTarútinoandVyázma,tohasteningitonwhileeasingthemovementofourarmy.

           Butbesidesthis,sincetheexhaustionandenormousdiminutionofthearmycausedbytherapidityoftheadvancehadbecomeevident,anotherreasonforslackeningthepaceanddelayingpresenteditselftoKutúzov.TheaimoftheRussianarmywastopursuetheFrench.TheroadtheFrenchwouldtakewasunknown,andsothecloserourtroopstrodontheirheelsthegreaterdistancetheyhadtocover.OnlybyfollowingatsomedistancecouldonecutacrossthezigzagpathoftheFrench.Alltheartfulmaneuverssuggestedbyourgeneralsmeantfreshmovementsofthearmyandalengtheningofitsmarches,whereastheonlyreasonableaimwastoshortenthosemarches.TothatendKutúzov’sactivitywasdirectedduringthewholecampaignfromMoscowtoVílna—notcasuallyorintermittentlybutsoconsistentlythatheneveroncedeviatedfromit.

           Kutúzovfeltandknew—notbyreasoningorsciencebutwiththewholeofhisRussianbeing—whateveryRussiansoldierfelt:thattheFrenchwerebeaten,thattheenemywasflyingandmustbedrivenout;butatthesametimehelikethesoldiersrealizedallthehardshipofthismarch,therapidityofwhichwasunparalleledforsuchatimeoftheyear.
