           AtdawnonthesixteenthofNovember,Denísov’ssquadron,inwhichNicholasRostóvservedandwhichwasinPrinceBagratión’sdetachment,movedfromtheplacewhereithadspentthenight,advancingintoactionasarranged,andaftergoingbehindothercolumnsforabouttwothirdsofamilewasstoppedonthehighroad.RostóvsawtheCossacksandthenthefirstandsecondsquadronsofhussarsandinfantrybattalionsandartillerypassbyandgoforwardandthenGeneralsBagratiónandDolgorúkovridepastwiththeiradjutants.Allthefearbeforeactionwhichhehadexperiencedaspreviously,alltheinnerstruggletoconquerthatfear,allhisdreamsofdistinguishinghimselfasatruehussarinthisbattle,hadbeenwasted.TheirsquadronremainedinreserveandNicholasRostóvspentthatdayinadullandwretchedmood.Atnineinthemorning,heheardfiringinfrontandshoutsofhurrah,andsawwoundedbeingbroughtback(therewerenotmanyofthem),andatlasthesawhowawholedetachmentofFrenchcavalrywasbroughtin,convoyedbyasótnyaofCossacks.Evidentlytheaffairwasoverand,thoughnotbig,hadbeenasuccessfulengagement.Themenandofficersreturningspokeofabrilliantvictory,oftheoccupationofthetownofWischauandthecaptureofawholeFrenchsquadron.
