           “Att-ention!”shoutedtheregimentalcommanderinasoul-shakingvoicewhichexpressedjoyforhimself,severityfortheregiment,andwelcomefortheapproachingchief.

           Alongthebroadcountryroad,edgedonbothsidesbytrees,cameahigh,lightblueViennesecalèche,slightlycreakingonitsspringsanddrawnbysixhorsesatasmarttrot.BehindthecalèchegallopedthesuiteandaconvoyofCroats.BesideKutúzovsatanAustriangeneral,inawhiteuniformthatlookedstrangeamongtheRussianblackones.Thecalèchestoppedinfrontoftheregiment.KutúzovandtheAustriangeneralweretalkinginlowvoicesandKutúzovsmiledslightlyastreadingheavilyhesteppeddownfromthecarriagejustasifthosetwothousandmenbreathlesslygazingathimandtheregimentalcommanderdidnotexist.
