           OnreceivingcommandofthearmiesKutúzovrememberedPrinceAndrewandsentanorderforhimtoreportatheadquarters.

           PrinceAndrewarrivedatTsárevo-ZaymíshcheontheverydayandattheveryhourthatKutúzovwasreviewingthetroopsforthefirsttime.Hestoppedinthevillageatthepriest’shouseinfrontofwhichstoodthecommanderinchief’scarriage,andhesatdownonthebenchatthegateawaitinghisSereneHighness,aseveryonenowcalledKutúzov.Fromthefieldbeyondthevillagecamenowsoundsofregimentalmusicandnowtheroarofmanyvoicesshouting“Hurrah!”tothenewcommanderinchief.Twoorderlies,acourierandamajor-domo,stoodnearby,sometenpacesfromPrinceAndrew,availingthemselvesofKutúzov’sabsenceandofthefineweather.Ashort,swarthylieutenantcolonelofhussarswiththickmustachesandwhiskersrodeuptothegateand,glancingatPrinceAndrew,inquiredwhetherhisSereneHighnesswasputtingupthereandwhetherhewouldsoonbeback.

           PrinceAndrewrepliedthathewasnotonhisSereneHighness’staffbutwashimselfanewarrival.Thelieutenantcolonelturnedtoasmartorderly,who,withthepeculiarcontemptwithwhichacommanderinchief’sorderlyspeakstoofficers,replied:

           “What?HisSereneHighness?Iexpecthe’llbeheresoon.Whatdoyouwant?”

           Thelieutenantcolonelofhussarssmiledbeneathhismustacheattheorderly’stone,dismounted,gavehishorsetoadispatchrunner,andapproachedBolkónskiwithaslightbow.Bolkónskimaderoomforhimonthebenchandthelieutenantcolonelsatdownbesidehim.
