           Facinghimlayafieldofwinterrye,therehisownhuntsmanstoodaloneinahollowbehindahazelbush.ThehoundshadscarcelybeenloosedbeforeNicholasheardoneheknew,Voltórn,givingtongueatintervals;otherhoundsjoinedin,nowpausingandnowagaingivingtongue.Amomentlaterheheardacryfromthewoodedravinethatafoxhadbeenfound,andthewholepack,joiningtogether,rushedalongtheravinetowardtheryefieldandawayfromNicholas.

           Hesawthewhipsintheirredcapsgallopingalongtheedgeoftheravine,heevensawthehounds,andwasexpectingafoxtoshowitselfatanymomentontheryefieldopposite.
