           Theweatherwasalreadygrowingwintryandmorningfrostscongealedanearthsaturatedbyautumnrains.Theverdurehadthickenedanditsbrightgreenstoodoutsharplyagainstthebrownishstripsofwinterryetroddendownbythecattle,andagainstthepale-yellowstubbleofthespringbuckwheat.Thewoodedravinesandthecopses,whichattheendofAugusthadstillbeengreenislandsamidblackfieldsandstubble,hadbecomegoldenandbright-redislandsamidthegreenwinterrye.Thehareshadalreadyhalfchangedtheirsummercoats,thefoxcubswerebeginningtoscatter,andtheyoungwolveswerebiggerthandogs.Itwasthebesttimeoftheyearforthechase.ThehoundsofthatardentyoungsportsmanRostóvhadnotmerelyreachedhardwintercondition,butweresojadedthatatameetingofthehuntsmenitwasdecidedtogivethemathreedays’restandthen,onthesixteenthofSeptember,togoonadistantexpedition,startingfromtheoakgrovewheretherewasanundisturbedlitterofwolfcubs.
