           In1806theoldprincewasmadeoneoftheeightcommandersinchiefthenappointedtosupervisetheenrollmentdecreedthroughoutRussia.Despitetheweaknessofage,whichhadbecomeparticularlynoticeablesincethetimewhenhethoughthissonhadbeenkilled,hedidnotthinkitrighttorefuseadutytowhichhehadbeenappointedbytheEmperorhimself,andthisfreshopportunityforactiongavehimnewenergyandstrength.Hewascontinuallytravelingthroughthethreeprovincesentrustedtohim,waspedanticinthefulfillmentofhisduties,severetocruelwithhissubordinates,andwentintoeverythingdowntotheminutestdetailshimself.PrincessMaryhadceasedtakinglessonsinmathematicsfromherfather,andwhentheoldprincewasathomewenttohisstudywiththewetnurseandlittlePrinceNicholas(ashisgrandfathercalledhim).ThebabyPrinceNicholaslivedwithhiswetnurseandnurseSávishnainthelateprincess’roomsandPrincessMaryspentmostofthedayinthenursery,takingamother’splacetoherlittlenephewasbestshecould.
