           InOctober,1805,aRussianarmywasoccupyingthevillagesandtownsoftheArchduchyofAustria,andyetotherregimentsfreshlyarrivingfromRussiaweresettlingnearthefortressofBraunauandburdeningtheinhabitantsonwhomtheywerequartered.Braunauwastheheadquartersofthecommanderinchief,Kutúzov.

           OnOctober11,1805,oneoftheinfantryregimentsthathadjustreachedBraunauhadhaltedhalfamilefromthetown,waitingtobeinspectedbythecommanderinchief.Despitetheun-Russianappearanceofthelocalityandsurroundings—fruitgardens,stonefences,tiledroofs,andhillsinthedistance—anddespitethefactthattheinhabitants(whogazedwithcuriosityatthesoldiers)werenotRussians,theregimenthadjusttheappearanceofanyRussianregimentpreparingforaninspectionanywhereintheheartofRussia.

           Ontheeveningofthelastday’smarchanorderhadbeenreceivedthatthecommanderinchiefwouldinspecttheregimentonthemarch.Thoughthewordsoftheorderwerenotcleartotheregimentalcommander,andthequestionarosewhetherthetroopsweretobeinmarchingorderornot,itwasdecidedataconsultationbetweenthebattalioncommanderstopresenttheregimentinparadeorder,ontheprinciplethatitisalwaysbetterto“bowtoolowthannotbowlowenough.
