           Whenthelastconvulsionsofthebody,whichthespiritwasleaving,occurred,PrincessMaryandNatáshawerepresent.

           “Isitover?”saidPrincessMarywhenhisbodyhadforafewminuteslainmotionless,growingcoldbeforethem.Natáshawentup,lookedatthedeadeyes,andhastenedtoclosethem.Sheclosedthembutdidnotkissthem,butclungtothatwhichremindedhermostnearlyofhim—hisbody.

           “Wherehashegone?Whereishenow?...”

           Whenthebody,washedanddressed,layinthecoffinonatable,everyonecametotakeleaveofhimandtheyallwept.

           LittleNicholascriedbecausehisheartwasrentbypainfulperplexity.ThecountessandSónyacriedfrompityforNatáshaandbecausehewasnomore.Theoldcountcriedbecausehefeltthatbeforelong,he,too,musttakethesameterriblestep.

           NatáshaandPrincessMaryalsoweptnow,butnotbecauseoftheirownpersonalgrief;theyweptwithareverentandsofteningemotionwhichhadtakenpossessionoftheirsoulsattheconsciousnessofthesimpleandsolemnmysteryofdeaththathadbeenaccomplishedintheirpresence.
