           “Ifonlysomefoolwouldmarryher!”Thenheslammedthedoor,sentforMademoiselleBourienne,andsubsidedintohisstudy.

           Attwoo’clockthesixchosenguestsassembledfordinner.

           Theseguests—thefamousCountRostopchín,PrinceLopukhínwithhisnephew,GeneralChatróvanoldwarcomradeoftheprince’s,andoftheyoungergenerationPierreandBorísDrubetskóy—awaitedtheprinceinthedrawingroom.

           Borís,whohadcometoMoscowonleaveafewdaysbefore,hadbeenanxioustobepresentedtoPrinceNicholasBolkónski,andhadcontrivedtoingratiatehimselfsowellthattheoldprinceinhiscasemadeanexceptiontotheruleofnotreceivingbachelorsinhishouse.

           Theprince’shousedidnotbelongtowhatisknownasfashionablesociety,buthislittlecircle—thoughnotmuchtalkedaboutintown—wasoneitwasmoreflatteringtobereceivedinthananyother.BoríshadrealizedthistheweekbeforewhenthecommanderinchiefinhispresenceinvitedRostopchíntodinneronSt.Nicholas’Day,andRostopchínhadrepliedthathecouldnotcome:

           “OnthatdayIalwaysgotopaymydevotionstotherelicsofPrinceNicholasBolkónski.
