           Itwasclearandfrosty.Abovethedirty,ill-litstreets,abovetheblackroofs,stretchedthedarkstarrysky.OnlylookingupattheskydidPierreceasetofeelhowsordidandhumiliatingwereallmundanethingscomparedwiththeheightstowhichhissoulhadjustbeenraised.AttheentrancetotheArbátSquareanimmenseexpanseofdarkstarryskypresenteditselftohiseyes.Almostinthecenterofit,abovethePrechístenkaBoulevard,surroundedandsprinkledonallsidesbystarsbutdistinguishedfromthemallbyitsnearnesstotheearth,itswhitelight,anditslongupliftedtail,shonetheenormousandbrilliantcometof1812—thecometwhichwassaidtoportendallkindsofwoesandtheendoftheworld.InPierre,however,thatcometwithitslongluminoustailarousednofeelingoffear.Onthecontraryhegazedjoyfully,hiseyesmoistwithtears,atthisbrightcometwhich,havingtraveledinitsorbitwithinconceivablevelocitythroughimmeasurablespace,seemedsuddenly—likeanarrowpiercingtheearth—toremainfixedinachosenspot,vigorouslyholdingitstailerect,shininganddisplayingitswhitelightamidcountlessotherscintillatingstars.ItseemedtoPierrethatthiscometfullyrespondedtowhatwaspassinginhisownsoftenedandupliftedsoul,nowblossomingintoanewlife.
