           Inthemorning,onanemptystomach,alltheoldquestionsappearedasinsolubleandterribleasever,andPierrehastilypickedupabook,andifanyonecametoseehimhewasglad.

           Sometimesherememberedhowhehadheardthatsoldiersinwarwhenentrenchedundertheenemy’sfire,iftheyhavenothingtodo,tryhardtofindsomeoccupationthemoreeasilytobearthedanger.ToPierreallmenseemedlikethosesoldiers,seekingrefugefromlife:someinambition,someincards,someinframinglaws,someinwomen,someintoys,someinhorses,someinpolitics,someinsport,someinwine,andsomeingovernmentalaffairs.“Nothingistrivial,andnothingisimportant,it’sallthesame—onlytosaveoneselffromitasbestonecan,”thoughtPierre.“Onlynottoseeit,thatdreadfulit!”
