           “Where’sthathuntsmanfrom?Heisnot‘Uncle’s’man.”

           Thehuntsmengotthefox,butstayedtherealongtimewithoutstrappingittothesaddle.Theirhorses,bridledandwithhighsaddles,stoodnearthemandtheretoothedogswerelying.Thehuntsmenwavedtheirarmsanddidsomethingtothefox.Thenfromthatspotcamethesoundofahorn,withthesignalagreedonincaseofafight.

           “That’sIlágin’shuntsmanhavingarowwithourIván,”saidNicholas’groom.

           NicholassentthemantocallNatáshaandPétyatohim,androdeatafootpacetotheplacewherethewhipsweregettingthehoundstogether.Severalofthefieldgallopedtothespotwherethefightwasgoingon.

           Nicholasdismounted,andwithNatáshaandPétya,whohadriddenup,stoppednearthehounds,waitingtoseehowthematterwouldend.Outofthebushescamethehuntsmanwhohadbeenfightingandrodetowardhisyoungmaster,withthefoxtiedtohiscrupper.Whilestillatadistancehetookoffhiscapandtriedtospeakrespectfully,buthewaspaleandbreathlessandhisfacewasangry.Oneofhiseyeswasblack,butheprobablywasnotevenawareofit.

           “Whathashappened?”askedNicholas.

           “Alikelything,killingafoxourdogshadhunted!Anditwasmygraybitchthatcaughtit!Gotolaw,indeed!...Hesnatchesatthefox!Igavehimonewiththefox.Hereitisonmysaddle!Doyouwantatasteofthis?...”saidthehuntsman,pointingtohisdaggerandprobablyimagininghimselfstillspeakingtohisfoe.
