           Readingtheseletters,Nicholasfeltadreadoftheirwantingtotakehimawayfromsurroundingsinwhich,protectedfromalltheentanglementsoflife,hewaslivingsocalmlyandquietly.Hefeltthatsoonerorlaterhewouldhavetore-enterthatwhirlpooloflife,withitsembarrassmentsandaffairstobestraightenedout,itsaccountswithstewards,quarrels,andintrigues,itsties,society,andwithSónya’sloveandhispromisetoher.Itwasalldreadfullydifficultandcomplicated;andherepliedtohismotherincold,formallettersinFrench,beginning:“MydearMamma,”andending:“Yourobedientson,”whichsaidnothingofwhenhewouldreturn.In1810hereceivedlettersfromhisparents,inwhichtheytoldhimofNatásha’sengagementtoBolkónski,andthattheweddingwouldbeinayear’stimebecausetheoldprincemadedifficulties.ThislettergrievedandmortifiedNicholas.InthefirstplacehewassorrythatNatásha,forwhomhecaredmorethanforanyoneelseinthefamily,shouldbelosttothehome;andsecondly,fromhishussarpointofview,heregrettednottohavebeentheretoshowthatfellowBolkónskithatconnectionwithhimwasnosuchgreathonorafterall,andthatifhelovedNatáshahemightdispensewithpermissionfromhisdotardfather.ForamomenthehesitatedwhetherheshouldnotapplyforleaveinordertoseeNatáshabeforeshewasmarried,butthencamethemaneuvers,andconsiderationsaboutSónyaandabouttheconfusionoftheiraffairs,andNicholasagainputitoff.
