           PrinceAndrewlistenedtotheaccountoftheopeningoftheCouncilofState,whichhehadsoimpatientlyawaitedandtowhichhehadattachedsuchimportance,andwassurprisedthatthisevent,nowthatithadtakenplace,didnotaffecthim,andevenseemedquiteinsignificant.HelistenedwithquietironytoBítski’senthusiasticaccountofit.Averysimplethoughtoccurredtohim:“WhatdoesitmattertomeortoBítskiwhattheEmperorwaspleasedtosayattheCouncil?Canallthatmakemeanyhappierorbetter?”

           AndthissimplereflectionsuddenlydestroyedalltheinterestPrinceAndrewhadfeltintheimpendingreforms.HewasgoingtodinethateveningatSperánski’s,“withonlyafewfriends,”asthehosthadsaidwheninvitinghim.TheprospectofthatdinnerintheintimatehomecircleofthemanhesoadmiredhadgreatlyinterestedPrinceAndrew,especiallyashehadnotyetseenSperánskiinhisdomesticsurroundings,butnowhefeltdisinclinedtogotoit.
