           MademoiselleBourienne,too,seemedpassionatelyfondoftheboy,andPrincessMaryoftendeprivedherselftogiveherfriendthepleasureofdandlingthelittleangel—asshecalledhernephew—andplayingwithhim.

           NearthealtarofthechurchatBaldHillstherewasachapeloverthetombofthelittleprincess,andinthischapelwasamarblemonumentbroughtfromItaly,representinganangelwithoutspreadwingsreadytoflyupwards.Theangel’supperlipwasslightlyraisedasthoughabouttosmile,andonceoncomingoutofthechapelPrinceAndrewandPrincessMaryadmittedtooneanotherthattheangel’sfaceremindedthemstrangelyofthelittleprincess.Butwhatwasstillstranger,thoughofthisPrinceAndrewsaidnothingtohissister,wasthatintheexpressionthesculptorhadhappenedtogivetheangel’sface,PrinceAndrewreadthesamemildreproachhehadreadonthefaceofhisdeadwife:“Ah,whyhaveyoudonethistome?”

           SoonafterPrinceAndrew’sreturntheoldprincemadeovertohimalargeestate,Boguchárovo,abouttwenty-fivemilesfromBaldHills.PartlybecauseofthedepressingmemoriesassociatedwithBaldHills,partlybecausePrinceAndrewdidnotalwaysfeelequaltobearingwithhisfather’speculiarities,andpartlybecauseheneededsolitude,PrinceAndrewmadeuseofBoguchárovo,beganbuildingandspentmostofhistimethere.

           AftertheAusterlitzcampaignPrinceAndrewhadfirmlyresolvednottocontinuehismilitaryservice,andwhenthewarrecommencedandeverybodyhadtoserve,hetookapostunderhisfatherintherecruitmentsoastoavoidactiveservice.
