           Onreceivingtheorderhegavehishorsethereinandgallopedalongtheline.AtfirstherodealongthelineofBagratión’stroops,whichhadnotyetadvancedintoactionbutwerestandingmotionless;thenhecametotheregionoccupiedbyUvárov’scavalryandherehenoticedastirandsignsofpreparationforbattle;havingpassedUvárov’scavalryheclearlyheardthesoundofcannonandmusketryaheadofhim.Thefiringgrewlouderandlouder.

           Inthefreshmorningairwerenowheard,nottwoorthreemusketshotsatirregularintervalsasbefore,followedbyoneortwocannonshots,butarollofvolleysofmusketryfromtheslopesofthehillbeforePratzen,interruptedbysuchfrequentreportsofcannonthatsometimesseveralofthemwerenotseparatedfromoneanotherbutmergedintoageneralroar.

           Hecouldseepuffsofmusketrysmokethatseemedtochaseoneanotherdownthehillsides,andcloudsofcannonsmokerolling,spreading,andminglingwithoneanother.Hecouldalso,bythegleamofbayonetsvisiblethroughthesmoke,makeoutmovingmassesofinfantryandnarrowlinesofartillerywithgreencaissons.

           Rostóvstoppedhishorseforamomentonahillocktoseewhatwasgoingon,butstrainhisattentionashewouldhecouldnotunderstandormakeoutanythingofwhatwashappening:thereinthesmokemenofsomesortweremovingabout,infrontandbehindmovedlinesoftroops;butwhy,whither,andwhotheywere,itwasimpossibletomakeout.Thesesightsandsoundshadnodepressingorintimidatingeffectonhim;onthecontrary,theystimulatedhisenergyanddetermination.
