           Onthecontrary,thesoldiersbecameawarethatinfront,behind,andonallsides,otherRussiancolumnsweremovinginthesamedirection.Everysoldierfeltgladtoknowthattotheunknownplacewherehewasgoing,manymoreofourmenweregoingtoo.

           “Therenow,theKúrskieshavealsogonepast,”wasbeingsaidintheranks.

           “It’swonderfulwhatalotofourtroopshavegathered,lads!LastnightIlookedatthecampfiresandtherewasnoendofthem.AregularMoscow!”

           Thoughnoneofthecolumncommandersrodeuptotheranksortalkedtothemen(thecommanders,aswesawatthecouncilofwar,wereoutofhumoranddissatisfiedwiththeaffair,andsodidnotexertthemselvestocheerthemenbutmerelycarriedouttheorders),yetthetroopsmarchedgaily,astheyalwaysdowhengoingintoaction,especiallytoanattack.Butwhentheyhadmarchedforaboutanhourinthedensefog,thegreaterpartofthemenhadtohaltandanunpleasantconsciousnessofsomedislocationandblunderspreadthroughtheranks.Howsuchaconsciousnessiscommunicatedisverydifficulttodefine,butitcertainlyiscommunicatedverysurely,andflowsrapidly,imperceptibly,andirrepressibly,aswaterdoesinacreek.HadtheRussianarmybeenalonewithoutanyallies,itmightperhapshavebeenalongtimebeforethisconsciousnessofmismanagementbecameageneralconviction,butasitwas,thedisorderwasreadilyandnaturallyattributedtothestupidGermans,andeveryonewasconvincedthatadangerousmuddlehadbeenoccasionedbythesausageeaters.
