           Asoldieronthemarchishemmedinandbornealongbyhisregimentasmuchasasailorisbyhisship.Howeverfarhehaswalked,whateverstrange,unknown,anddangerousplaceshereaches,justasasailorisalwayssurroundedbythesamedecks,masts,andriggingofhisship,sothesoldieralwayshasaroundhimthesamecomrades,thesameranks,thesamesergeantmajorIvánMítrich,thesamecompanydogJack,andthesamecommanders.Thesailorrarelycarestoknowthelatitudeinwhichhisshipissailing,butonthedayofbattle—heavenknowshowandwhence—asternnoteofwhichallareconscioussoundsinthemoralatmosphereofanarmy,announcingtheapproachofsomethingdecisiveandsolemn,andawakeninginthemenanunusualcuriosity.Onthedayofbattlethesoldiersexcitedlytrytogetbeyondtheinterestsoftheirregiment,theylistenintently,lookabout,andeagerlyaskconcerningwhatisgoingonaroundthem.

           Thefoghadgrownsodensethatthoughitwasgrowinglighttheycouldnotseetenpacesahead.Busheslookedlikegigantictreesandlevelgroundlikecliffsandslopes.Anywhere,onanyside,onemightencounteranenemyinvisibletenpacesoff.Butthecolumnsadvancedforalongtime,alwaysinthesamefog,descendingandascendinghills,avoidinggardensandenclosures,goingovernewandunknownground,andnowhereencounteringtheenemy.
