           “Butdon’thurtmylittlehorse!”saidtheAlsatiangood-naturedlytoRostóvwhentheanimalwashandedovertothehussar.

           Rostóvsmilinglyreassuredthedragoonandgavehimmoney.

           “Alley!Alley!”saidtheCossack,touchingtheprisoner’sarmtomakehimgoon.

           “TheEmperor!TheEmperor!”wassuddenlyheardamongthehussars.

           Allbegantorunandbustle,andRostóvsawcominguptheroadbehindhimseveralriderswithwhiteplumesintheirhats.Inamomenteveryonewasinhisplace,waiting.

           Rostóvdidnotknoworrememberhowherantohisplaceandmounted.Instantlyhisregretatnothavingbeeninactionandhisdejectedmoodamidpeopleofwhomhewaswearyhadgone,instantlyeverythoughtofhimselfhadvanished.HewasfilledwithhappinessathisnearnesstotheEmperor.Hefeltthatthisnearnessbyitselfmadeuptohimforthedayhehadlost.Hewashappyasaloverwhenthelonged-formomentofmeetingarrives.Notdaringtolookroundandwithoutlookinground,hewasecstaticallyconsciousofhisapproach.
