           Thedaywasbrightandsunnyafterasharpnightfrost,andthecheerfulglitterofthatautumndaywasinkeepingwiththenewsofvictorywhichwasconveyed,notonlybythetalesofthosewhohadtakenpartinit,butalsobythejoyfulexpressiononthefacesofsoldiers,officers,generals,andadjutants,astheypassedRostóvgoingorcoming.AndNicholas,whohadvainlysufferedallthedreadthatprecedesabattleandhadspentthathappydayininactivity,wasallthemoredepressed.

           “Comehere,Wostóv.Let’sdwinktodwownourgwief!”shoutedDenísov,whohadsettleddownbytheroadsidewithaflaskandsomefood.

           TheofficersgatheredroundDenísov’scanteen,eatingandtalking.

           “There!Theyarebringinganother!”criedoneoftheofficers,indicatingacaptiveFrenchdragoonwhowasbeingbroughtinonfootbytwoCossacks.

           OneofthemwasleadingbythebridleafinelargeFrenchhorsehehadtakenfromtheprisoner.

           “Sellusthathorse!”DenísovcalledouttotheCossacks.

           “Ifyoulike,yourhonor!”

           TheofficersgotupandstoodroundtheCossacksandtheirprisoner.TheFrenchdragoonwasayoungAlsatianwhospokeFrenchwithaGermanaccent.Hewasbreathlesswithagitation,hisfacewasred,andwhenheheardsomeFrenchspokenheatoncebeganspeakingtotheofficers,addressingfirstone,thenanother.Hesaidhewouldnothavebeentaken,itwasnothisfaultbutthecorporal’swhohadsenthimtoseizesomehorsecloths,thoughhehadtoldhimtheRussianswerethere.Andateverywordheadded:“Butdon’thurtmylittlehorse!”andstrokedtheanimal.
