           Thecountesspressedherdaughter’shand,closedhereyes,andbecamequietforamoment.Suddenlyshesatupwithunaccustomedswiftness,glancedvacantlyaroundher,andseeingNatáshabegantopressherdaughter’sheadwithallherstrength.Thensheturnedtowardherdaughter’sfacewhichwaswincingwithpainandgazedlongatit.

           “Natásha,youloveme?”shesaidinasofttrustfulwhisper.“Natásha,youwouldnotdeceiveme?You’lltellmethewholetruth?”

           Natáshalookedatherwitheyesfulloftearsandinherlooktherewasnothingbutloveandanentreatyforforgiveness.

           “MydarlingMummy!”sherepeated,strainingallthepowerofherlovetofindsomewayoftakingonherselftheexcessofgriefthatcrushedhermother.

           Andagaininafutilestrugglewithrealityhermother,refusingtobelievethatshecouldlivewhenherbelovedboywaskilledinthebloomoflife,escapedfromrealityintoaworldofdelirium.

           Natáshadidnotrememberhowthatdaypassednorthatnight,northenextdayandnight.Shedidnotsleepanddidnotleavehermother.Herperseveringandpatientloveseemedcompletelytosurroundthecountesseverymoment,notexplainingorconsoling,butrecallinghertolife.

           Duringthethirdnightthecountesskeptveryquietforafewminutes,andNatásharestedherheadonthearmofherchairandclosedhereyes,butopenedthemagainonhearingthebedsteadcreak.Thecountesswassittingupinbedandspeakingsoftly.
