           Thecountesswaslyinginanarmchairinastrangeandawkwardposition,stretchingoutandbeatingherheadagainstthewall.Sónyaandthemaidswereholdingherarms.

           “Natásha!Natásha!...”criedthecountess.“It’snottrue...it’snottrue...He’slying...Natásha!”sheshrieked,pushingthosearoundheraway.“Goaway,allofyou;it’snottrue!Killed!...ha,ha,ha!...It’snottrue!”

           Natáshaputonekneeonthearmchair,stoopedoverhermother,embracedher,andwithunexpectedstrengthraisedher,turnedherfacetowardherself,andclungtoher.

           “Mummy!...darling!...Iamhere,mydearestMummy,”shekeptonwhispering,notpausinganinstant.

           Shedidnotletgoofhermotherbutstruggledtenderlywithher,demandedapillowandhotwater,andunfastenedandtoreopenhermother’sdress.

           “Mydearestdarling...Mummy,myprecious!...”shewhisperedincessantly,kissingherhead,herhands,herface,andfeelingherownirrepressibleandstreamingtearsticklinghernoseandcheeks.
