           “Well,andthatboy?”

           “Vesénny?Oh,he’sthrownhimselfdownthereinthepassage.Fastasleepafterhisfright.Hewasthatglad!”

           AfterthatPétyaremainedsilentforalongtime,listeningtothesounds.Heheardfootstepsinthedarknessandablackfigureappeared.

           “Whatareyousharpening?”askedamancominguptothewagon.

           “Why,thisgentleman’ssaber.”

           “That’sright,”saidtheman,whomPétyatooktobeanhussar.“Wasthecuplefthere?”

           “There,bythewheel!”

           Thehussartookthecup.

           “Itmustbedaylightsoon,”saidhe,yawning,andwentaway.

           PétyaoughttohaveknownthathewasinaforestwithDenísov’sguerrillaband,lessthanamilefromtheroad,sittingonawagoncapturedfromtheFrenchbesidewhichhorsesweretethered,thatunderitLikhachëvwassittingsharpeningasaberforhim,thatthebigdarkblotchtotherightwasthewatchman’shut,andtheredblotchbelowtotheleftwasthedyingembersofacampfire,thatthemanwhohadcomeforthecupwasanhussarwhowantedadrink;butheneitherknewnorwaitedtoknowanythingofallthis.Hewasinafairykingdomwherenothingresembledreality.Thebigdarkblotchmightreallybethewatchman’shutoritmightbeacavernleadingtotheverydepthsoftheearth.Perhapstheredspotwasafire,oritmightbetheeyeofanenormousmonster.
