           “Whyaren’tyouasleep,sir?”saidaCossackwhowassittingunderawagon.

           “No,ah...Likhachëv—isn’tthatyourname?DoyouknowIhaveonlyjustcomeback!We’vebeenintotheFrenchcamp.”

           AndPétyagavetheCossackadetailedaccountnotonlyofhisridebutalsoofhisobject,andwhyheconsidereditbettertoriskhislifethantoact“justanyhow.”

           TheCossackbentforwardfromunderthewagontogetacloserlookatPétya.

           “OfcourseIcan.”

           Likhachëvgotup,rummagedinhispack,andsoonPétyaheardthewarlikesoundofsteelonwhetstone.Heclimbedontothewagonandsatonitsedge.TheCossackwassharpeningthesaberunderthewagon.

           “Isay!Aretheladsasleep?”askedPétya.
