           Itwasplainthatthecommanderadmiredhisregiment,rejoicedinit,andthathiswholemindwasengrossedbyit,yethisstrutseemedtoindicatethat,besidesmilitarymatters,socialinterestsandthefairsexoccupiednosmallpartofhisthoughts.

           “Well,MichaelMítrich,sir?”hesaid,addressingoneofthebattalioncommanderswhosmilinglypressedforward(itwasplainthattheybothfelthappy).“Wehadourhandsfulllastnight.However,Ithinktheregimentisnotabadone,eh?”

           Thebattalioncommanderperceivedthejovialironyandlaughed.

           “ItwouldnotbeturnedoffthefieldevenontheTsarítsinMeadow.”

           “What?”askedthecommander.

           Atthatmoment,ontheroadfromthetownonwhichsignalershadbeenposted,twomenappearedonhorseback.Theywereanaide-de-campfollowedbyaCossack.

           Theaide-de-campwassenttoconfirmtheorderwhichhadnotbeenclearlywordedthedaybefore,namely,thatthecommanderinchiefwishedtoseetheregimentjustinthestateinwhichithadbeenonthemarch:intheirgreatcoats,andpacks,andwithoutanypreparationwhatever.

           AmemberoftheHofkriegsrathfromViennahadcometoKutúzovthedaybeforewithproposalsanddemandsforhimtojoinupwiththearmyoftheArchdukeFerdinandandMack,andKutúzov,notconsideringthisjunctionadvisable,meant,amongotherargumentsinsupportofhisview,toshowtheAustriangeneralthewretchedstateinwhichthetroopsarrivedfromRussia.Withthisobjectheintendedtomeettheregiment;sotheworsetheconditionitwasin,thebetterpleasedthecommanderinchiefwouldbe.
