           Sothesoldiers,afteratwenty-milemarch,werekeptmendingandcleaningallnightlongwithoutclosingtheireyes,whiletheadjutantsandcompanycommanderscalculatedandreckoned,andbymorningtheregiment—insteadofthestraggling,disorderlycrowdithadbeenonitslastmarchthedaybefore—presentedawell-orderedarrayoftwothousandmeneachofwhomknewhisplaceandhisduty,hadeverybuttonandeverystrapinplace,andshonewithcleanliness.Andnotonlyexternallywasallinorder,buthaditpleasedthecommanderinchieftolookundertheuniformshewouldhavefoundoneverymanacleanshirt,andineveryknapsacktheappointednumberofarticles,“awl,soap,andall,”asthesoldierssay.Therewasonlyonecircumstanceconcerningwhichnoonecouldbeatease.Itwasthestateofthesoldiers’boots.Morethanhalfthemen’sbootswereinholes.Butthisdefectwasnotduetoanyfaultoftheregimentalcommander,forinspiteofrepeateddemandsbootshadnotbeenissuedbytheAustriancommissariat,andtheregimenthadmarchedsomesevenhundredmiles.

           Thecommanderoftheregimentwasanelderly,choleric,stout,andthick-setgeneralwithgrizzledeyebrowsandwhiskers,andwiderfromchesttobackthanacrosstheshoulders.Hehadonabrand-newuniformshowingthecreaseswhereithadbeenfoldedandthickgoldepauletteswhichseemedtostandratherthanliedownonhismassiveshoulders.Hehadtheairofamanhappilyperformingoneofthemostsolemndutiesofhislife.Hewalkedaboutinfrontofthelineandateverysteppulledhimselfup,slightlyarchinghisback.
