           TheFrenchmaninsistedonhavingthepiecesreturnedthatwereleftoverandaskedPierretotranslatewhathesaid.

           “Whatdoeshewantthebitsfor?”saidKaratáev.“They’dmakefinelegbandsforus.Well,nevermind.”

           AndKaratáev,withasuddenlychangedandsaddenedexpression,tookasmallbundleofscrapsfrominsidehisshirtandgaveittotheFrenchmanwithoutlookingathim.“Ohdear!”mutteredKaratáevandwentaway.TheFrenchmanlookedatthelinen,consideredforamoment,thenlookedinquiringlyatPierreand,asifPierre’slookhadtoldhimsomething,suddenlyblushedandshoutedinasqueakyvoice:

           “Platoche!Eh,Platoche!Keepthemyourself!”Andhandingbacktheoddbitsheturnedandwentout.

           “There,lookatthat,”saidKaratáev,swayinghishead.“PeoplesaidtheywerenotChristians,buttheytoohavesouls.It’swhattheoldfolkusedtosay:‘Asweatinghand’sanopenhand,adryhand’sclose.’He’snaked,butyethe’sgivenitback.”

           Karatáevsmiledthoughtfullyandwassilentawhilelookingatthepieces.

           “Butthey’llmakegrandlegbands,dearfriend,”hesaid,andwentbackintotheshed.
