           “See,itfitswell!”Platónkeptrepeating,pullingtheshirtstraight.

           TheFrenchman,havingpushedhisheadandhandsthrough,withoutraisinghiseyes,lookeddownattheshirtandexaminedtheseams.

           “Yousee,dearman,thisisnotasewingshop,andIhadnopropertools;and,astheysay,oneneedsatooleventokillalouse,”saidPlatónwithoneofhisroundsmiles,obviouslypleasedwithhiswork.

           “It’sgood,quitegood,thankyou,”saidtheFrenchman,inFrench,“buttheremustbesomelinenleftover.”

           “Itwillfitbetterstillwhenitsetstoyourbody,”saidKaratáev,stilladmiringhishandiwork.“You’llbeniceandcomfortable....”

           “Thanks,thanks,oldfellow....Butthebitsleftover?”saidtheFrenchmanagainandsmiled.HetookoutanassignationrublenoteandgaveittoKaratáev.“Butgivemethepiecesthatareover.”

           PierresawthatPlatóndidnotwanttounderstandwhattheFrenchmanwassaying,andhelookedonwithoutinterfering.KaratáevthankedtheFrenchmanforthemoneyandwentonadmiringhisownwork
